This is absolutely right. Facebook surveyed me this morning with the question, “Is Facebook good or bad for the world?”
What an insane question. Technology is agnostic at best. Unless your product is somehow going to cure river blindness in Africa more cheaply and efficiently than current treatments, you’re probably just delivering advertising more effectively for companies.
I understand that we want to derive meaning from what we’re investing our lives in and the more you put yourself into something the more you want it to be valuable, but let’s be honest about what most tech start-ups are. You’re hoping to thread the needle on a market gap that will make you a billion dollars.
